Back-To-Back Flips For Edwards
Saturday, 01 March 2008 19:00

For the second week in a row Carl Edwards thrilled the fans with his trademark back flip after capturing Sunday’s UAW-Dodge 400. Edwards led four times for a total of 82 laps en route to his second win of the season. The win solidified the Roush Fenway Racing dominance at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

In the eleven year history of the 1.5-mile speedway, Jack Roush has collected six victories with four different drivers – including the inaugural event in 1998.

Edwards was strong throughout the day, but was forced to work his way from the back of the pack after a tire rolled loose on pit road under the third caution of the day.

It did not take long for Edwards to get his No. 99 Ford Fusion to the front though, as he retook the lead from Dale Earnhardt Jr. with just 73 laps to go. It appeared Edwards and his pit crew hit a streak of bad luck when another tire got away during the final series of pit stops coming on Lap 216. The No. 99 crew adamantly pointed out to the NASCAR Official that a cameraman filming the pit stop got in the way, causing the tire to roll away.

Under further review, the sanctioning body decided to hold off on any penalty – one that would have cost Edwards the race for sure.

Battling teammate Matt Kenseth, Edwards took the lead for the final time following a restart on Lap 236. Two late cautions and a Red Flag period brought the field to Edwards’ back bumper, but in the end no one had anything for him.

Leaving Las Vegas, Edwards jumps up four spots to lead the series points standing for the first time in his career.
