Lowe’s Motor Speedway and UPS together unveiled Dale Jarrett’s final ride in NASCAR competition. Jarrett – who competed in his final points race in the Sprint Cup Series Sunday at Bristol Motor Speedway – will compete for the final time in his career at the Sprint All-Star Race, May 17th at Lowe’s Motor Speedway.
Jarrett’s illustrious career, spanning twenty-one years, includes three Daytona 500 victories and the 1999 Cup Series championship. The North Carolina-native ran the first five events of the 2008 Sprint Cup Series for UPS and Michael Waltrip Racing before stepping out. Jarrett will trade his helmet and gloves for a microphone, as NASCAR’s newest retiree joins the ESPN broadcast booth.
Jarrett, along with H.A. “Humpy” Wheeler, president and general manger of Lowe’s Motors Speedway, and Laura Kouns, the motorsports marketing manager for UPS, debuted the car Jarrett would drive in his final event. As Jarrett pulled back the cover, the veteran took a minute to look over his last ride and the images from throughout his career scattered around the car’s paint scheme before giving the thumbs up. “The images look great and bring back a lot of really good memories,” Jarrett told the gathered media. “I have been very fortunate to far exceed anything I could have thought I might achieve in this sport thanks to a lot of people,” he continued. “This is the perfect way to end things.” When deciding where to end his career, Jarrett explained the reasons were two-fold. First was the fact he is guaranteed a starting spot in the All-Star Race, thanks to being the 1999 series champion. In addition, the All-Star Race at Lowe’s Motor Speedway offered Jarrett the perfect opportunity to end his career close to home with his friends and family. The 1999 champion had considered the Coca-Cola 600 and Indianapolis for his final NASCAR appearance. However, for Jarrett, the All-Star Race will be more about the fans and UPS more than himself. “This is where it should happen,”Jarrett explained.“The All-Star Race, that’s what it is about; the fans.” If it was not special enough, the night of Jarrett’s final ride will fall on the same day as his wife Kelley’s birthday. Offering advice to younger drivers out there, Jarrett explained,“Enjoy what you do and appreciate it, because it is an honor to do this at this level. Don’t take it for granted.” Jarrett continued,“Don’t get out of place in thinking this makes you anything special. We’re just race car drivers. Use the opportunity you have to benefit and help others as best you can.” In honor of his career, H.A. “Humpy” Wheeler announced Dale Jarrett, along with his father Ned, would be inducted into the Court of Legends located in front of the Smith Tower at Lowe’s Motor Speedway. The Court of Legends allows fans to measure up against some of the sport’s greatest figures by literally walking in their footsteps and sizing up their hand prints. Also to commemorate Jarrett’s retirement and final race, Lowe’s Motor Speedway is offering a ticket package for the Sprint All-Star Race called, “DJ’s Deal”. The deal, announced by Scott Cooper, the vice president of communication for the speedway, consists of a $44 weekend ticket for Friday-Saturday (May 16-17). With the ticket, fans will be admitted to Friday’s NASCAR Sprint All-Star qualifying, as well as the Craftsman Truck Series North Carolina Education Lottery 200. Saturday’s ticket is for the All-Star event. In addition, a discounted hospitality package is also being offered prior to Saturday’s Sprint All-Star Race. The $99 ticket includes food and drink in a UPS Racing-themed tent and a question and answer session with Dale Jarrett. UPS is planning on celebrating their tenure with Jarrett by finally fulfilling a promise to all the fans. Before the start of the Sprint All-Star Race, Jarrett will climb aboard the UPS Racing truck and take it around Lowe’s Motor Speedway. One lucky fan will be chosen to ‘race the truck’ with Jarrett. Fans that purchase “DJ’s Deal” will automatically be entered into the drawing. Tickets are on sale now at the Lowe’s Motor Speedway box office, at www.lowesmotorspeedway.com and available by calling 1-800-455-FANS.
