At Talladega Superspeedway there are a few words that describe dominance – Earnhardt, Hendrick Motorsports and Chevrolet.
The ‘bow-tie brigade’ has amassed an amazing 33 Cup Series victories over the last thirty years. In the last eighteen races at the 2.66-mile track, Chevrolet has won all but one event – the 2005 UAW-Ford 500, won by Dale Jarrett’s Ford.
With so much success at the Superspeedway, does anyone have anything for the Chevy’s? Besides Jarrett’s win in ’05, the next victory at Talladega by another manufacture came in 1998 when it was Jarrett again winning in a Ford. Chevrolet was shut-out of the winner’s circle that year, as Bobby Labonte captured the other Talladega event in a Pontiac. As for the rest of the competition, Toyota has never been to victory lane at the high-banked speedway, but did capture the pole in last year’s UAW-Ford 500 with Michael Waltrip. To find the last victory at Talladega for a Dodge, you would have to go back to 1976 when Dave Marcis sat on the pole and won the Talladega 500. With all the talk centered on the dominance of Hendrick Motorsports and the Earnhardt family when the circuit rolls around to Talladega, remember they all drove Chevy’s to the victory circle.
