Heading into this weekend at Richmond International Raceway, we take a look back at some of the races throughout the years at the ¾-mile track.
The year was 1993 and Richmond at that time was the third race on the schedule. Dale Jarrett came into the event fresh off his huge win in the Daytona 500 and Rusty Wallace had taken the prior week’s race at Rockingham.
The big news of the weekend centered around two major stories. Legendary engine builder Waddell Wilson announced he was leaving Hendrick Motorsports to become the General Manager for Larry Hedrick’s team with Phil Parsons behind the wheel. Away from the speedway, car owner Junior Johnson was recovering from a successful heart surgery at Duke University Medical Center. On the track, Ken Schrader captured his first pole of the ’93 season and his first on a short track, while Rick Mast put the No.1 Skoal Classic Ford on the outside of the front row. Darrell Waltrip and Kyle Petty battled for the lead for much of the early going, with Petty taking the point. Petty’s No. 42 Mellow Yellow Pontiac led nearly a quarter of the event and went on to finish in the fifth spot. The third and final caution of the event brought the leaders to pit road for service. Davey Allison’s Robert Yates Racing pit crew – led by Larry McReynolds – responded and gave the Alabama-native the lead. Allison was able to remain at the front of the field until the final round of green flag pit stops. The No. 28 Havoline Ford hit its pit stall with 47 laps to go, changing four tires and adding just one can of fuel in just 17.36 seconds – very quick for the day. That stop put Allison back out front with Rusty Wallace and the late Alan Kulwicki following behind. No one was ever able to make a charge for the lead, as Allison cruised to victory with a 4.38 second lead. The win was the first for Allison and Robert Yates Racing in the 1993 season and would be the last of Allison’s much too short career. Allison died later that year from injuries sustained in a helicopter crash at Talladega Superspeedway.
