Thursday night Denny Hamlin returned home to give back. Hamlin and his Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Kyle Busch joined twenty-five local drivers to compete in the Denny Hamlin 175 late model stock race at Southside Speedway in Midlothian, Va.
The event launched Hamlin's new charity, the Denny Hamlin Foundation.
The Denny Hamlin Foundation will focus on raising money and awareness for those affected by Cystic Fibrosis. A disease that affects the mucus glands of the lungs and digestive system, Cystic Fibrosis is very common amongst children, often cutting their lives short. Race winner Kyle Busch said it definitely wasn't an easy win. "I showed up at the track and was just trying to learn the tack and everything and got used to that somewhat," Busch explained. "It was a good car on the long run and that's what we needed there last night. It was a lot of fun and it was for a great cause so that's what made it more enjoyable helping the Denny Hamlin Foundation. To get a win and donate all the winnings and everything too that was pretty cool." "It was a great event," Hamlin explained. "We raised $50,000 for the Denny Hamlin Foundation that we're kicking off this weekend. It was a lot of fun. It's an event I'm going to look forward to putting on every year. I've never seen so many people at Southside Speedway in one night. It's great to have that kind of turnout."
