A two-day tire test hosted by Lowe’s Motor Speedway concluded Tuesday evening. Teams were able to try a number of things in preparation for the upcoming events at Lowe’s in May, as well as get more accustomed to the current car on the mile-and-a-half tracks.
Goodyear supplied the teams with the tire that will be used at LMS for both the All-Star event May 17th and the Coca-Cola 600, which will be run Memorial Day weekend May 25, 2008.
“It seems to be a safe tire as far as wear is concerned,” Red Bull Racing’s Brian Vickers explained Monday. “This [test] is definitely important – I think it’s a big race, it’s an important race for all the teams – it’s in their backyard. There’s a lot of track on the circuit that are very similar to this one and that adds a little bit to it. When you go to Phoenix and test, you still learn a lot, but most of it only applies to Phoenix. Here we can apply it to a lot of other tracks. I’m very glad and proud of NASCAR for taking the initiative to add this to the schedule after some of the issues we’ve had at mile-and-a-half tracks with the races.” For some teams and drivers, simply having more track time is a blessing in itself. “For us, any testing lately has been important,” Bill Davis Racing’s Dave Blaney said. Currently 36th in Owner Points, just seventy-one points away from being locked into the show and not being forced to qualify on time to make the race. “We’ve been struggling,” Blaney admitted. “We tested Nashville (Superspeedway) last week and felt like we learned some stuff and that’s where we haven’t been testing enough I don’t think. I think it’s caught up with us so we’re trying to do more – two days last week, two days next week and hopefully we’ll come out of here with a better game plan as to how to go to Darlington and come back here and all the way down the line." Teams will take what they have learned over the past two days at Lowe’s and be able to use that not only for the All-Star race and the Coca-Cola 600, but also throughout the year at other mile-and-a-half tracks.
