This weekend Dale Earnhardt Jr. will put his normal National Guard/AMP Energy colors on the sidelines and give honor to one of NASCAR’s most popular cars. Earnhardt Jr. will climb behind the wheel of his normal No. 88, which will this week carry the colors and sponsor of Mountain Dew.
The paint scheme is a throw-back honoring the car made famous by Darrell Waltrip from 1981-1982. Waltrip had success at Darlington with these colors on his hood, winning the 1981 Rebel 500.
\"I\'m so excited about this paint scheme. To run a paint scheme like the Mountain Dew one is a tribute to the history of the sport and the heritage at Darlington,\" Earnhardt Jr. explained.
The throw-back paint scheme is part of the “Old School, New School” promotion put together by Mountain Dew. The company is allowing customers to enter a contest with the chance to win prizing including cars, video game systems and other items. Winners will have a choice between an ‘old school’ item and a ‘new school’ item – for example a 2009 Chevrolet Corvette or a vintage Corvette. An entire line of merchandise has been created around this weekend’s special paint scheme. Die-cast cars, t-shirts, hats, etc. will be available at the track, online and where ever race fans buy their gear.
