On The Bubble - Coca-Cola 600

After a weekend where everyone who completed their qualifying run made it into the All-Star Showdown, it is back to business in a Thursday night thriller qualifying session that will have those teams outside the top-35 in Owner Points on edge.

Coming off an impressive 9th place run at Darlington Raceway two weekends ago, Dave Blaney and his No. 22 Caterpillar Camry team dug themselves out of a hole to secure a spot in the top-35 in Owner Points. After missing the show at Talladega Superspeedway, this Bill Davis Racing team utilized extensive test sessions and has rebounded amazingly. Blaney was able to come home tenth in the All-Star Showdown last week and looks to improve on that for Sunday night's 600-miler.

Sam Hornish Jr. did more than earn his 'Darlington Stripe' two weeks ago. The open-wheel star tried to add his own coat of paint to go with the Lady In Black's fresh new surface. Hornish struggled all night long and brought his No. 77 Penske Racing Dodge home in the 38th spot, losing one position in the Owner Points and falling outside the top-35. The team was able to rebound last week, coming home an impressive second place in the All-Star Showdown, earning him a spot in the night's main event. Hornish didn't just run around and let the All-Stars have all the fun during the Sprint All-Star Race either, the rookie driver was able to use pit strategy in the final segment to finish 7th, ahead of Dale Earnhardt Jr., Mark Martin and Carl Edwards. Hornish and his No. 77 Mobil 1 Dodge team hope to continue that momentum beginning with tonight's qualifying session.

Hall of Fame Racing's J.J. Yeley continues to fight his way back towards the 35th spot after struggles earlier in the year - including missing the event at Talladega. Yeley came home ninth in the All-Star Showdown and will have to make great improvements if he and his No. 96 DLP Technology team want to secure a spot in the show.

Chip Ganassi Racing's No. 40 entry has been forced to deal with driver changes and continued struggles after Dario Franchitti suffered a broken ankle in a Nationwide Series crash at Talladega. This week veteran Sterling Marlin is back behind the wheel of the No. 40 Dodge and hopes to improve on his 34th place finish at Darlington.

The No. 70 Haas/CNC Racing Chevrolet fell two spots last week, after Johnny Sauter failed to make the show at Darlington. This team has yet to find the chemistry it needs to pull itself up and contend for spots in the top-20.

A.J. Allmendinger has clearly shown the time he spent out of the No. 84 Red Bull Toyota was well spent. Allmendinger qualified fourth at Talladega in his first race back from the five-race break in which Mike Skinner helped the former open-wheel star adjust and learn. Impressive runs at Talladega, Richmond and Darlington were all spoiled by on-track incidents, but this team and its young driver have kept their heads high. Going into last Saturday night's All-Star Showdown, Allmendinger qualified fourth and looked to be one of the strongest in the field early on. Allmendinger went on to lead every lap in the second 20-lap segment en route to his first Cup Series trophy. An ecstatic Allmendinger explained, "I felt like I won the Daytona 500. Nobody understands what this means to me after what we've been through."

Tonight these drivers will have to race not only the clock, but also each other as 45 cars hit the track for a Thursday night qualifying session. Qualifying for Sunday's Coca-Cola 600 begins at 7:00 p.m. ET at Lowe's Motor Speedway and for all of you Hardcore Race Fans at home, be sure to tune into Speed Channel to follow all of the action.
