Busch Continues His Dominance With Pole For Coca-Cola 600
Saturday, 24 May 2008 12:17

Kyle Busch haters, brace yourselves. The driver better known as 'Rowdy' Busch is in victory lane again, this time celebrating his fourth career Coors Light Pole Award. Busch was able to edge out Kasey Kahne and Brian Vickers to take the top spot and the honors.

"The guys on the team did an awesome job for me to work on [the car]," Busch said following Thursday night's qualifying session. "I talked with [crew chief Steve] Addington after practice and we kind of made some strategy moves that we might want to make some adjustments to and see what we could learn from the car and try to make some changes for qualifying. We knew we had to learn something and try something. Whatever it was it worked, I'm not sure exactly what he did."

Earlier on the day, Busch appeared to be upset with his car and struggled to find its handle in practice. Ironically, Busch described the car as, "Probably not pole material, but that's alright because it's a long race." As they have done all year long, the entire No. 18 Joe Gibbs Racing crew responded to this challenge and it paid off with another trophy.

Busch pointed out that the competition should be an improvement on last week's some-what dull All-Star Race due to everyone having more track time. "I think Kasey's pretty good," Busch went on to say. "I wasn't quite expecting him to be as good as he was today in practice, but he was right up there and then he qualified right up there too.

"I think whoever gets out front can get out there and guys get stuck behind you and you just can't make a move and can't get past them," Busch continued. "If it does look like the same thing as the All-Star Race, fortunately I'm the one starting from the front and I can get out there and lead some laps and get some bonus points hopefully and have a good solid 600."

Last week's winner of the Sprint All-Star Race Kasey Kahne was second fastest on the evening, running a lap of 29.142 seconds at a speed of 185.433 mph. Kahne, who has had success at the mile-and-a-half Lowe's Motor Speedway, explained he hopes to utilize last week's set-up in Saturday's practice and go from there.

"We learned that when the sun went down, the grip picked up a lot for the way our set-up was," Kahne explained. "I felt like we picked up speed there and it all kind of went back to the test and the long runs we made here were pretty good."

Brian Vickers will start Sunday's Coca-Cola 600 from the third spot - the best starting position for the Red Bull Racing Team driver in 2008. Vickers, who described the third as "bittersweet", missed the pole by almost three thousandths of a second.

Vickers explained the frustration, "Anytime it comes down to hundredths and thousandths of a second you always ask yourself as a driver 'What else could I have done?' 'Could I have pushed it just a little bit harder somewhere and got that extra thousandth or hundredth of a second'" When you get smoked by a tenth or two then you know that there's not much you could have done. It's bittersweet, we're pretty happy with it and hopefully we can be there at the end of 600 miles."

Last year's Coca-Cola 600 served as a breakout race for both Vickers and his No. 83 Red Bull team. Vickers led the most laps in the race and was forced to settle with a disappointing 5th-place finish after a mechanical issue took him out of contention for the win.

"It definitely makes us feel good going into [Sunday's race], but at the same time it's a completely different set-up," Vickers said. He went on to explain last year's notes have helped more on his Nationwide Series car than on the Cup side, but that he was still confident for the 600 because of a strong performance last week in the All-Star Race and the impressive qualifying run tonight.

Greg Biffle will start Sunday's Coca-Cola 600 from the fourth spot, while David Ragan rounds out the top-5. Both the Cup Series and Nationwide Series have the day off tomorrow and will be back in action Saturday morning.
