Kasey Kahne celebrated in victory lane for the second week in a row, and after struggling last season and somewhat during the first part of this season, appears to have his Gillett Evernham Motorsports team pointed in the right direction.
While team co-owner Ray Evernham explained his team's turn-around has been an "evolutionary" process, his partner George Gillett has another idea. "There really was a turning point," Gillett said following the race. "It was the fans. When the fans voted Kasey in last weekend, it changed everything. Then Kenny [Francis] and Kasey had a great car. Ray's genius really showed 'So thanks to the fans because it really came out of them.'" After winning the Sprint Fan Vote, Kahne earned a spot in last Saturday's Sprint All-Star Race. The driver of the No. 9 Budweiser Dodge used great pit strategy to get out front during the final 25-lap segment to earn the win. "We were headed home," Kahne said Sunday. "We were out of the All-Star Race and the fans put us in it. So it felt good to get voted in. There were some other great teams and drivers we were going against. It felt good to get voted in by the fans. The win in the All-Star Race gave Kahne and his entire Gillett Evernham team the confidence they needed heading into the Coca-Cola 600 weekend. "I can tell you that this team has had a much different step since they won that race here last week," Evernham pointed out. Gillett - who enjoyed his first Cup Series points paying win Sunday - joined Evernham Motorsports in the August of 2007 in order to provide additional financial support and allow Evernham to focus on the competition side of things, while the Gillett family focused on running a successful business. "I think we became Ray's partner because Ray is a great person and because Ray has a great reputation and Ray has tremendous success. So we joined with a man and wanted to build a new winning tradition together." Following the two weeks in Charlotte that winning tradition seems to be on the right track. "It feels good to win, no matter what it is," Kahne summed up. "We can carry this win with us throughout the rest of the season, throughout Dover and just keep working together as a team and trying to build and make our Dodges go fast."
