Leaving the comfort of Charlotte behind, it's back on the road this weekend as the Cup Series makes their way to Dover, Del. for the Best Buy 400. As is the case each week, those drivers outside the top-35 will have to sweat it out during Friday's qualifying session. The three drivers that fail to be fast will have made the trip in vain, while those that make the show begin prepping for race conditions.
Coming off last week's Coca-Cola 600 at Lowe's Motor Speedway, there was little movement in the group of go-or-go-homers. Sam Hornish Jr. remains in 36th-spot, just three spots out of 35th, but 151 points ahead of 37th-place J.J. Yeley. The open-wheel sensation will be competing at the Monster Mile for the first time in the Cup Series this weekend and, if he survives, has the potential to breathe a bit next week at Pocono. Yeley continues to try and find his footing this season and hopes the Monster is kind to him. After finishing 25th in his Dover debut, Yeley has failed to finish higher than 30th in his four other starts at the high-banked oval. Continuing the musical chairs that has taken place in relief of Dario Franchitti, this week Jeremy Mayfield will climb aboard the Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sebates No. 40 Dodge. Franchitti - who suffered an ankle injury during a Nationwide Series accident at Talladega - is scheduled to return to action this week in the Nationwide Series, but is still out on the Cup side. A.J. Allmendinger is coming off a successful two week trip to Charlotte and is one spot higher in the owner standings. A win in the Sprint All-Star Showdown and a top-20 in the Coca-Cola 600 have this team and its young driver's heads up and confidence high. Allmendinger struggled at Dover last year, but was able to make the show for both events. The real movement following last week's event took place just north off the bubble. Michael Waltrip finds himself in a position he dreaded being in all last year and hopes a good run at Dover can propel him out of the danger zone. Waltrip fell two spots this week to 35th, just three spots ahead of Sam Hornish Jr. Scott Riggs also finds himself in an unwelcome position after receiving a 150 point penalty for infractions found Saturday morning at Lowe's. The penalty dropped Riggs and the No. 66 team eight spots in Owner Points, leaving him in 34th-spot, just five points ahead of Hornish. The biggest mover last week was the Toyota of Dave Blaney. A 17th-place finish moved the Bill Davis Racing Toyota up three spots in the standings to 32nd, tied with the Dale Earnhardt Inc. No. 01 driven by Regan Smith. Since missing the show at Talladega, this team has turned up the heat and burst out of the bubble. Qualifying for the Best Buy 400 begins Friday afternoon at 3:10 p.m. ET and can be seen live on your local Speed Channel.
