Leaving Dover International Speedway, the biggest story concerning the points standings was the shake-up at the top of the charts following the Lap 16 crash that involved six drivers in the top-12. However, as the Cup Series heads into race 14 of the season things around the top-35 are starting to tighten up.
Currently only 108 points separate 28th-spot in the owner standings from 36th. With the top-35 locked into the show each week, teams are desperately trying to have good finishes and avoid trouble. Any slip-up or string of bad luck could make things extremely difficult and stressful each Friday afternoon. Michael Waltrip kept his head above water for another week, as the owner/driver remains in 35th-spot. Despite starting the year on a somewhat promising note - no illegal additives were found in any of his cars - it has quickly taken a turn for the worse. Waltrip is only eleven points behind 34th-place, however that car is one of his own. Rookie Michael McDowell has slipped back from the buffer built up by teammate David Reutimann earlier in the year and is in danger of slipping outside the top-35. McDowell made it out of Dover in one piece in 30th-spot, but fell three places in the owner standings. Another weekend like that at Pocono and Fridays will become more stressful than the one he had at Texas Motor Speedway. Haas CNC Racing's Scott Riggs fell two more spots after Dover and is now on the outside looking in. Riggs was involved in the Lap 16 incident at Dover and had to settle with a 39th-place finish. Following a 150-point penalty handed out for infractions found at Lowe's Motor Speedway, Riggs and the No. 66 team has been forced to work without both the crew chief and car chief, something extremely difficult for most top level teams, let alone Haas CNC. One of the few teams that seemed to have a handle on this car last season, it seems this organization has slowly broken down from the inside out. On the flip side of things, Dave Blaney continued his climb up the owner standings ladder following another top-10 finish. As noted in previous "On The Bubble" articles, Blaney missed the show at Talladega in April and has been on a mission ever since to make up for that lost time. This weekend's 9th-place finish bumped his Bill Davis Racing Toyota up two spots to 30th, 67-points ahead of Michael Waltrip in 35th. Another driver on the up and up after Dover is Penske Racing's Sam Hornish Jr. After the confidence-boosting runner-up finish in the Sprint All Star Challenge, Hornish has had finishes of 13th in the Coca-Cola 600 and an 18th last week at the Monster Mile. Heading to Pocono this weekend there are 45 drivers attempting to make the show at the 2.5-mile track. With only 43 spots available for Sunday's race, Friday will be a stressful qualifying session for those outside the top-35.
