A Look Back - 1991 Champion Spark Plug 400

This week we take a look back at the 1991 Champion Spark Plug 400 at Michigan International Raceway (MIS). In typical MIS fashion, the race appeared to come down to fuel mileage and a gamble, as Davey Allison attempted to save enough and sweep the year's events at the 2-mile D-shaped oval.

Just as everyone was beginning to wonder who would make it to the end, a caution flag flew on Lap 187 for debris on the track. With just 13 laps to go, Allison was out front with Mark Martin, Harry Gant, Dale Jarrett and Rusty Wallace behind him.

In an instant, the entire complexion of the race changed from fuel mileage to pit strategy as the leaders hit the pit road for the final stop of the day. Crew chief Larry McReynolds gave Allison four fresh tires and fuel, while Martin took only two. Eddie Wood made the call for fuel only and sent Dale Jarrett back on track with the lead in his No. 21 Citgo Ford.

Following the restart, Allison was all over the back bumper of Jarrett's white and red Ford. The two raced hard for many laps with Allison peaking to the outside plotting his move.

Coming to the white flag, Allison made the move to the outside of Jarrett as they crossed the line side-by-side. Neither driver gave an inch through the first two corners, with Jarrett getting a bit loose off Turn 2. That did not affect the Hickory, N.C. native as he kept his foot in the throttle and drag raced Allison's No. 28 into Turns 3 and 4.

With the checkered flag in the air the two cars came off the final corner side-by-side with Allison just out front. The two made contact and dashed towards the line with Allison on the outside and Jarrett on the inside. As they crossed the line Jarrett pulled ahead by inches, earning the first Cup Series victory of his career in a photo-finish.

The win marked the first win for the Wood Brothers since May 1987, when Kyle Petty went to victory lane in the World 600 in Charlotte.

"When he wins his first one," father Ned Jarrett said on the ESPN broadcast, "I wanted him to do it that way - racing for it."

As Jarrett pulled his No. 21 Wood Brothers Ford into victory lane and climbed from his car, the huge crowd in the stands erupted with applause and cheers.

"I appreciate Davey," Jarrett said of his battle. "I raced him awfully hard there. I hope he understands it's the first one. I wanted it awfully bad."

The finish was one of the greatest in MIS history and one that highlight reels show to this day. With Jarrett's retirement earlier this year it seemed only fitting to focus on one of the greatest finishes of his career - not to mention his first. Thirty-two wins and a Cup Series championship later, it all started with this win in August 1991.
