Mark Martin forecasted a victory at Sunday’s Allstate 400 at the Brickyard.
Martin's prediction proved to be false when he was the tenth car behind the winner, Jimmie Johnson, recording an 11th place finish.
Having to pit under green two times on Sunday, Martin could not catch up to fulfill his prophecies. “It was frustrating,” Martin said. “It wasn’t bad because they started to throw the cautions soon enough. At the beginning, it wasn’t soon enough. “But at the end, they started throwing it sooner. We got caught twice [having to pit under green], but after they got the hang of it and saw that it was going to take 10-lap runs only, it was OK.” Tire problems haunted every team at Indianapolis. With the tires not lasting any more than ten laps at a time, Martin did not deem that it could be worse for him. “I didn’t think that would happen to us, but I was wrong,” he said. “After that it was just very hard to make your way back to the front. We really had to keep taking four tires to keep the right sides on, so we were not able to get position in the pits.” Martin understood that he did not have a car of the same caliber that Johnson was piloting. Despite not living up to his prediction, Martin defended that he had a better car than what his finish revealed. “We probably didn’t have anything for Jimmie Johnson, so I wasn’t going to be able to back up my prediction, but we had a lot better car than where we finished,” Martin said. “The team gave me a great car today,” Martin said. “ECR [Earnhardt-Childress Racing] gave me a great engine, and it’s just unfortunate the way it all turned out.”
