Roush Fenway Racing’s Matt Kenseth may have had the worst problems in Indianapolis this past Sunday.
Staying inside the Top-15 during the opening laps, Kenseth fell victim to a tire explosion on the 47th lap. The result of the blown tire tore apart his rear end, obligating him to go into pit road to assess some repairs.
"It’s a really, really, really disappointing situation," Kenseth said. "This one of the two biggest races of the year, and to never have this tire here before and not come and do an open test and to work on these things and work on the tires, it’s pretty darn disappointing." Kenseth stated that the drivers did not get much of a warning before the tire would blow. “You get about six corners’ worth of warning, about a lap and a half," Kenseth said. "It’ll just get loose if it’s the right rear. That’s when it started shaking about three seconds before it blew out." Team owner, Jack Roush, made clear that the teams finishes may have been better had they been invited to the test sessions at Indianapolis Motor Speedway in April. Ford was the only manufacturer that was not requested to attend. “We only missed by an inch," said car owner Jack Roush. "This is a game of inches, but Goodyear didn’t give us a chance to test here. They brought other manufacturers here and they didn’t give us a chance to test. We didn’t have a drive file that was current. We didn’t know what to expect from the track, so we were one change behind all the time during practice. "Whether that would have made a difference in the result or not I’m not sure, but we would have had better data to work from if we would have had the same drive file off the same current track information that everybody else had." Kenseth wound up in 38th place. His teammates, who posted more successful results, were all located in the Top-15. Carl Edwards finished second, Jamie McMurray ended sixth, Greg Biffle concluded the race in the eighth spot and David Ragan crossed the finish in 14th. Kenseth also expressed sympathy for the fans that watched and/or attended the race. "We had a great car today," he said. "I feel bad for the fans; we’re running three-quarters speed because we’re worried of the tires blowing out, and they got blown out every eight laps. So, pretty disappointed.”
