Friday, 01 August 2008 17:38

Jimmie Johnson is returning to his former, dominant self in the past few weeks.

The two-time Cup Series champion recorded a second place finish at Chicagoland two weeks ago, and a pole start along with a victory at Indianapolis. Things seem to returning to normal for the No. 48 team.

Johnson added to his recent dominance on Friday when he piloted the No.48 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet around the triangle shaped track at a speed of 168.215 miles per hour, earning his second consecutive pole spot.

“It’s been a lot of work through Hendrick Motorsports and it’s good to see it all coming together,” Johnson stated.

Johnson stole the pole from Mark Martin late in qualifying, who recorded a speed of 167.560 miles per hour. This is Martin’s third second place qualifying effort since he started in the second spot at Daytona on the July 4th weekend.

David Gilliland was awarded the third position with an effort of 167.187 miles per hour.

Jeff Gordon and Matt Kenseth completed the Top-5.

The sixth through tenth spots were rewarded to Ryan Newman, Kasey Kahne, Brian Vickers, Greg Biffle and Kurt Busch.
