Running On Fumes: Johnson Coasts His Way To A Third Place Finish
Tuesday, 05 August 2008 07:54

Johnson kept up the good work on Sunday after posting a third place finish in the Sunoco Red Cross Pennsylvania 500 at Pocono Raceway.

Johnson ran out of fuel on the last lap and was able to coast to the finish line, maintaining the third position. A surprised Johnson stated, "I'm really shocked we ran out of gas. Thought we had a lap. Ended up almost a corner short."

Johnson and the No. 48 Hendrick Motorsports team felt that the race would end under green. The team had seen the storms on the radar but had faith on their initial decision, and pitted under caution.

"We really felt like we were going finish up the race under green," Johnson said of the call. "We saw on the radar, it showed there were some cells popping up, but it wasn't a front moving through that was going to wash us out. So we just stuck to that plan. We got a little nervous at a couple different points, but fortunately we were able to race to the end today."
