Orbiting the track at a speed of 188.536 mph, Brian Vickers took command of the pole for Sunday’s 3M Performance 400 at Michigan International Speedway.
Vickers’ effort was three tenths of a second good enough for Red Bull Racing’s first pole spot in NASCAR’s top series.
Qualifying for the second position was Jimmie Johnson, who reached a speed of 187.028 mph. Rounding out the top-5 was Elliott Sadler, Michigan’s defending champ Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Jeff Gordon. Starting in the sixth position is Patrick Carpentier followed by David Reutimann, Regan Smith, Greg Biffle and Scott Riggs. In the first race he’s been locked in to, AJ Allmendinger put out a 33rd place effort. Coming off of a hot weekend at Watkins Glen, Marcos Ambrose was able to put his No. 21 Little Debbie Ford into 39th place. On Sunday we will find out if Ambrose’s skill ventures further than road course racing. Making his Cup Series debut, Brad Coleman did just good enough to make the race qualifying for the 43rd position.
