What a weekend for Roush Fenway Racing and Carl Edwards. The Missouri-native celebrated his 29th birthday on Friday, won the Nationwide event on Saturday and made a clean sweep of the weekend by taking the win in Sunday's 3M Performance 400 presented by Bondo.
Just as it looked like Edwards was going to drive off into the sunset for his fifth win, Denny Hamlin's No. 11 FedEx Toyota blew an engine and brought out the sixth caution of the day. This brought Kyle Busch and the rest of the field to Edwards' back bumper for one final restart with just two laps to go.
"Kyle's very good at restarts and I knew he was going to hang back and get a run on my bumper like he did on Jimmie three or four weeks ago," Edwards explained following Sunday's event. "I just didn't want that to happen." With Busch lined up behind him, Edwards didn't let the pressure get to him as he got a great jump on the restart. Busch had nothing for him, as Edwards took the checkered flag for the fifth time in 2008, sweeping the weekend's races at MIS and gaining another ten bonus points for this year's Chase. "We're winning races, we're gearing up for the Chase and I'm feeling stronger than ever," Edwards confidently said in victory lane. Jack Roush's dominance at Michigan continued this weekend with four cars in the top-5 and all five in the top-10. One of the most competitive car owners in the garage, Roush is always a threat when the field heads to the manufacturer's backyard. Sunday's win at MIS gives Roush eleven wins on the 2-mile D-shaped oval, tying the Wood Brothers for the most wins at the track. One of the most impressive runs of the day came from sophomore driver David Ragan. Only eighty-nine points out of the top-12 entering the day's event, Ragan was able to run a solid race, lead some laps and gain on the twelfth-spot. The 22-year-old's third-place run matched his career best and showed that this kid can handle the pressure and will not be counted out of this year's Chase. "We still have three more races," Ragan explained after gaining ground on the Chase field. "That would mean something if we were going to Richmond next week, we'd probably pay attention to it a little more. We know what we have to do and that's keep getting top-5s, top-10s, survive Bristol and get a good finish in California. We know what's on the table, it's not going to be easy, but it will be exciting so stay tuned." Things are definitely going to continue to heat up as the series heads to one of the most electric tracks on the circuit - Bristol Motor Speedway.
