Edwards On Cup Series Pole In Bristol
Friday, 22 August 2008 16:51

Roush Fenway Racing's Carl Edwards will lead the field to the green flag on Saturday night in the Sharpie 500 at Bristol Motor Speedway. Currently second in the series standings, Edwards' quest to accumulate bonus points before the Chase begins will get off on the right foot Saturday night.

"That's as fast as I could go," Edwards explained. "I wish I hadn't hit the wall, but I imagine it will be worse than that by the time the race is over. Bob did a really good job because it was just like it was in practice."

Michael Waltrip Racing's David Reutimann surprised the field by putting his No. 44 UPS Toyota Camry on the outside pole with a lap of 15.835 seconds at 121.175 mph.

"It was a good lap," Reutimann summed up. "It was just a little free, but actually better than I thought it would be. I had to pedal it pretty hard coming off of turn two because I got back to the gas pretty quick and it shoved the front end a little bit. All in all, it ended up being a pretty good lap. It gave us a good pit selection and good starting position. It was by far the best starting position I've ever had here, so I'm pretty excited about that."

Despite the stellar qualifying run, Reutimann knows he still has his work cut out for him on Saturday night.

"Qualifying is one thing, but the race is another," Reutimann added. "We still have some work to do for the race. I feel like we're decent, we just have to get it to be more consistent. We fought being tight, then a little loose, and then tight again. We need to hit somewhere around the middle to see if we can find a sweet spot, and find out what the car wants. If we can do that, then we should be in good shape. Track position is pretty important at this place -- it's not an easy place to pass on. Track position is important anywhere you go anymore, and hopefully this qualifying effort will get us started on the right foot. I think we should have a pretty good car."

Jeff Gordon, Ragan Smith and Bill Elliott rounded out the top-5, while Kevin Harvick, Ken Schrader, A.J. Allmendinger, Kyle Busch and Elliott Sadler rounded out the top-10.  Jeff Green, Patrick Carpentier and Johnny Sauter failed to make the race.
