Bristol Might Be 'Just What The Doctor Ordered' For Gordon

Jeff Gordon must have a lot on his mind today. Going into tonight's Sharpie 500 at the Bristol Motor Speedway he sits ninth in the Chase to the Cup, fifty six points ahead of the twelfth and final tranfer spot, currently occupied by Denny Hamlin.

On top of his current points situation, Gordon is still winless in 2008. After scoring six victories last season he has struggled greatly this season, especially in the past ten races where he has finished in the top ten only three times.

Last week at Michigan was a low point for the four-time Cup champion, finishing forty second after making contact with teammate Jimmie Johnson. Gordon said after dropping out at Michigan that he "would have to enter the next few races with a different mindset."

Bristol is just what the driver of car number twenty four might need to turn his season around. Gordon has five wins under his belt at the fast half mile track in the east Tennessee hills, tying him with Kurt Busch for the most wins there among active drivers.

His last Bristol victory came in 2002 and ended a thiry one race drought. It has been twenty eight races since Gordon has visited victory lane.

Gordon and his Hendrick crew has the car all set to roll off third on tonight's starting grid and the veteran driver is happy with the racing surface track officials applied between races last season.

"We haven't been as good here since they re-did the track, but I do like what they have done," Gordon said this weekend. "I'm looking forward to the race and I'm confident this DuPont team will perform better."

"Bristol used to be a one groove race track where it was a little bit of Russian roulette," Gordon continued. "But now we've got multiple groovesand I love it. I think the racing is three times better."
