With both drivers competing in the top-5 for a majority of the race a 12th and 14th place finish, which would normally be good for the team, frustrated the two drivers.
Making his start in the 19th position Brian Vickers notes that being beaten off of pit road is starting to get on his last nerve. Vickers confirms that the pit road issues have been a regular occurrence.
“To be honest, I’m just getting tired of being beat off of pit road,” a disappointed Vickers stated. “I like the guys we have on our crew. They are good people, and I know they work really hard. They put the effort behind and that is what really counts, but this is becoming an every week thing where we are losing 10 or 15 spots off of pit road — not one, like 10 or 15. Then the penalty. The penalty absolutely killed us. It was at the end of the race. No matter how good of a car you have, when you get in traffic like that it’s just hard. You can only do so much.”
Ending the race in 12th Vickers was aware that a win may have been a long shot due to the performance of Jimmie Johnson, but knows that the No. 83 Red Bull Racing team had a higher finish in them. “I don’t think anybody had anything for Jimmie (Johnson). He was unbelievable. There were times at the end of a long run where they’d be calling my times out and we were a little faster than Jimmie, but it was very rare. He was good throughout the entire run. He was incredible,” Vickers noted. A.J. Allmendinger placed his best qualifying effort last Friday when he started in second place, outside of race winner Johnson. "I thought we won something for how excited everybody is,” Allmendinger exclaimed of his qualifying effort. “It was a great run. I knew the .91 lap that Jimmie (Johnson) put down was a pretty solid lap. Everybody at Red Bull builds solid cars. This whole 84 crew is coming together. We've had a few tough couple of weeks but we've been running strong at least when we're doing it. This is a good way to start the weekend and hopefully we can finish it off the same way."
With 70 laps remaining, Allmendinger was running in the fourth position but a slew of bad pit stops demoted the No. 84 team down to the 14th finishing position. “We had a really good car throughout the race,” Allmendinger confirmed. “Just to the end of the race during the last two big runs there we got too loose in the rear. I think the track got a little bit more grip than the front of the car and we just didn’t keep up with the rear. I think we still had a really good day, except our pit stops were horrible.” The 14th place finish disappointed the second year full-time driver, but could not complain with it because the finish placed Allmendinger and the No. 84 Red Bull Racing team back in the top-35 in the points standings once again. “I think we came in fourth with two pit stops to go and came out 12th and next pit stop came out 19th,” Allmendinger said. “With this competitive field and the way these cars are you can’t get back there. You’re basically restarting 38th at that point, and I think we made up five spots on the restart and me and (David) Ragan had a good run at the end there. That’s about where the car would have been. Could of, would of, should of … but 14th, we’re OK with it. We would have liked to have been better, but we’re in the top 35 in points and that’s what matters."
Allmendinger continued, “You just can’t lose 15 spots. Unless you had Jimmie Johnson’s car you couldn’t make that up. That was just tough. Like I said, you’re not just restarting 18th, you’re restarting 36th or 38th. The lap cars have just as much right to race as we do. You’re in so much dirty air, and that’s killing the tires and there’s just a lot going on. We stayed clean and did what we had to do. I think we could have been a little bit better but we got what we wanted out of it.”
