Jimmie Johnson Cleans House At Home Track
Monday, 01 September 2008 11:45

Two time Cup Series champion Jimmie Johnson cleaned house at his home track Sunday night, as he and his Hendrick Motorsports crew showed their hand to the competition. Johnson dominated the Pepsi 500 at the Auto Club Speedway as he showed Kyle Busch and Carl Edwards aren't the only ones fighting to claim this year's title.

The first driver to win a race at the Auto Club Speedway from the pole position, Johnson led 227 of 250 laps en route to his third win of the year. In dominant fashion, the No. 48 team showed its strength heading into this year's Chase.

Despite one slow pit stop, Johnson was able to make his way back to the front and claim his third victory of the year. With only one race remaining before the Chase begins, the No. 48 team appears to be focused on the big picture. Back-to-back championship runs have put this team in a position they should feel comfortable about.

Sporting the Jimmie Johnson Foundation paint scheme on the same car he won at Indianapolis Motor Speedway with and before his hometown crowd, Johnson explained how he enjoyed putting on a show.

"It's amazing to have the fan base we do here, it means the world to me to win here," Johnson explained. Dominating the weekend, Johnson went on to say, the longest thing it took him to do was to get out of the car in Victory Lane.

With track conditions an ever changing factor, Johnson's crew chief Chad Knaus - one of the best in the business - was able to factor in enough adjustability to last the night.

Following the victory Knaus pointed out, "As the sun started to set, the track really got a lot more grip. I think you could see the speeds on the timing and scoring were picking up. You had to adjust the car, because as you were getting faster into the corner you were getting tighter."

Looking forward to spoiling the Busch/Edwards Race to the Chase, Johnson and his team are optimistic towards the future and ready to do what it takes to win it all. Celebrating in Victory Lane, Johnson confidently said, "Here we go, let's get it going."

Roush Fenway Racing's Greg Biffle was the only one to even challenge Johnson, as he drove to a second-place finish. Fellow Chase contenders Denny Hamlin, Kevin Harvick and Matt Kenseth made up the top-5, while Carl Edwards, Kyle Busch, Kasey Kahne, David Reutimann and Clint Bowyer rounded out the top-10.
