Post-Race Chase Celebration Moved To Infield/Grandstands To Be Cleared Between Events
Saturday, 06 September 2008 08:07

Friday NASCAR and track officials decided to postpone all events at the Richmond International Raceway until Sunday afternoon in preparation of Tropical Storm Hanna. NASCAR Vice President of Corporate Communications, Jim Hunter made the announcement with track president Doug Fritz by his side, citing safety as the main concern. With both the Nationwide and the Cup Series races being run on the same day, things are bound to get hectic for those working the track.

"We talked to the county and they assured us - the state as well - that the worst of it is going to be tomorrow [Saturday]," Aimee Turner, Director of Public Relations for RIR told HardcoreRaceFans.com. "They feel like by the time everything goes through tonight [Friday] and tomorrow morning with the winds, the worst of the winds, they will still have most of tomorrow and tomorrow night to clear everything up and get the roads cleared to get the fans here."

According to the updated schedule, the Cup Series Chevy Rock & Roll 400 is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. ET, while the Nationwide Emerson Radio 250 gets underway under the lights at 7 p.m. Track officials made it clear, Sunday's event is not a two-for-one deal and that the grandstands will be cleared following the completion of the Cup Series event. Fans are asked to comply with all the rules of the track and to cooperate with all those working to clear the grandstands - something much more difficult than it may seem.

"Our guest services will take care of that for us, as well as our operations department," Turner said of clearing the grandstands. "We'll have enough people on board to do that, we're giving ourselves plenty otime. [The Cup Series race] starts at 1 p.m., give-or-take a three-hour race, so that's four o'clock and that gives us from four to six to get the grandstands cleared out and then let the Nationwide fans in."

One thing that will help with this process will be moving the twelve-man post-race Chase celebration to a tent in the infield where the drivers meeting is held, instead of having it on a stage on the frontstretch as in years past. While this was not planned in order to speed up the exit of the fans, it will surely keep fans from lingering around after the race.

"We can not build the stage in the infield, because we don't have enough room since both garages are being used," Turner said of the decision to move the celebration. "Since we don't have the room to build the stage, therefore we have to move it. Unfortunately, we're not going to be able to have the fans there watching it this time, again it is just one of those things that happens when you have to change your race date and adjust your schedule. Hopefully, everyone will be understanding about that."
