Mother Nature Says The Kid Can't Play
Sunday, 07 September 2008 08:50

One of the most hyped debuts in NASCAR history will have to be put on hold for another week, after Mother Nature and her daughter Hanna cancelled Cup Series qualifying Friday afternoon. With the qualifying session a wash, the field was set according to the 2008 owners point, leaving 18-year-old Joey Logano out of luck and out of the race.

One of the faster cars in Friday morning's practice session, Logano was looking forward to making his Cup Series debut, but knew the threat of rain was a possibility.

"I really hope it don't rain," Logano smiled and said Friday, "that would suck a lot. Our car is pretty good so that is good, but it's really something I can't control. I've heard a lot about it and haven't heard too much good, so I don't really want to hear a whole bunch. I just have to go with it there and hopefully we'll get qualifying tonight and get the thing in the show. We'll just have to see."

Unfortunately for both Logano and all of those in the stands, that first start will have to wait for another week. Next week's race at New Hampshire Motor Speedway was scheduled to be Logano's second career start and first in the Hall of Fame Racing No. 96 Toyota, but now it will be the young hot-shoe's first start for both.

As word circulated that qualifying had been cancelled, so did the rumor Joe Gibbs Racing would put Logano behind the wheel of the No. 96 for the race at Richmond. Currently 40th in owner points, the No. 96 made the race with veteran Ken Schrader. By switching drivers, Logano would still be able to make his debut, however a spokesman for Joe Gibbs Racing quickly put a squash on that rumor.

So all of you Hardcore Race Fans out there wondering where Joey Logano is during Sunday's Chevy Rock & Roll 400 will have to tune in next week at New Hampshire for the much-anticipated debut. In the meantime, the kid from Connecticut will be tearing up Sunday night's Nationwide race, set to follow the conclusion of the Cup Series event.
