Johnson's Time To Shine
Sunday, 07 September 2008 17:48

For the second week in a row, Jimmie Johnson and Chad Knaus showed they mean business and are ready to go for their third championship in a row. After beating the No. 20 car off pit road on the final stop of the day, Johnson was forced to hold off a hard charging Tony Stewart en route to his fourth victory of the year.

"I think this 48 car will be ready for this championship battle," Johnson confidently said in victory lane. For the second year in a row, Johnson and the No. 48 team enter the Chase following back-to-back wins.

"Momentum is certainly something we are looking at and trying to carry, but more than anything, I think we are just confident in our stops and what I'm doing on the track, and the way we can adjust on the car," Johnson explained.

With four wins this year, Johnson goes into this year's Chase third in points just forty points behind Kyle Busch. On a quest to tie Cale Yarborough as the only driver to win three championships in a row, Johnson appears to be in the catbird seat.

"I think chances are high," Johnson said of his chances for his third consecutive championship. "I feel we have all the tools and now it's just up to those ten races."

Racing hard with Tony Stewart over the last fifteen laps, Johnson explained gaining another ten bonus points was in the back of his mind - as was the fact Stewart is still winless this year. Johnson was aware if he could not pull away from the No. 20 Home Depot Camry, the bump and run was a definite possibility.

"I loved it," the two time Cup Series champion said of racing Stewart. "Earlier in the race, Tony and I raced really hard for the lead, as well. It was nice today to be able to race and not worry about the points. I'm sure Tony was really focused on a victory, and I can't remember what his situation was coming in points-wise, but I had a blast all day long. At the end. That's how you want to win a race. You want to win a race going against the best in the business, and Tony is certainly one of those guys, racing your butt off, side-by-side."

With this team ending the regular season the way it did in 2007, the competition should be one that are scared heading into the Chase. If Johnson, Knaus and the entire No. 48 crew can back up the Chase they had last year - four wins in a row - they might just be headed into the NASCAR record books.

"I'm trying to show up at next weeks race scared, worried about eleven other guys, and worry about doing my part," Johnson said following the win and looking forward to the Chase. "When you re-rack this thing with ten races to go you just never know what's going to happen. So I want to show up next week worried about all eleven of them and just do my job."
