Greg Biffle is going to be a contender for this year's Chase. The Roush Fenway Racing driver proved that Sunday by making the late-race pass on defending series champion Jimmie Johnson to take the win in the Sylvania 300 at New Hampshire Motor SpeedwayThe driver of the No. 16 Ford Fusion broke a thirty-three race winless streak to start the Chase off on the right foot.
Biffle had come close to winning on a number of occasions earlier this year, yet it always seemed something would go wrong and keep the Biff out of Victory Lane. Sunday, Biffle was forced to battle not only the competition, but also brake issues and questionable fuel mileage. The Biff would not be denied as he drove under Johnson and went on to lead the final twelve laps of the race.
"I was holding back at the end there - the middle part of the run, then we got those cautions, thankfully," a relieved and confident Biffle said from Victory Lane. "That's what my plan was inside the car. Closed us up on Jimmie Johnson and gave us a shot at him. I was a little better than him on the short run, he was a little bit loose and I knew it." "I'll tell you what, I can't describe it," Biffle went on to say of finally breaking the thirty-three race winless streak. The win bumped the driver of the No. 16 up six spots in the series standings to third, just thirty points behind Carl Edwards and Jimmie Johnson, who are tied for the lead. Johnson led a race-high ninety-six laps and appeared to be on his way to his third victory in a row - that is until Biffle spoiled the day. "On long runs we had been strong all day long, the short runs are what hurt me the most," Johnson explained following the event. "I felt a little vulnerable, and sure he got by. I was inching back up to him, but I just didn't have enough laps there." Eight of the drivers in the top-10 were those racing for this year's championship. Matt Kenseth and the points leader going into Sunday's race, Kyle Busch, had troubles in New Hampshire and took a big hit in the standings. Busch's problems started early when a broken sway bar bolt made driving the No. 18 M&M's Toyota Camry nearly impossible. A spin on Lap 83 made things worse for Busch, who ended the day in the 34th-spot. With eighty bonus points going into Sunday's race, Busch's disappointing run dropped him seven spots in the standings to 8th, seventy-four points behind Edwards and Johnson. For the second week in a row, Matt Kenseth was caught up in someone else's troubles. Racing hard after a restart on Lap 228, the lapped car of Chad McCumbee got loose, triggering a five-car incident that included Kenseth. Heavy damage forced the driver of the No. 17 Roush Fenway Racing Ford to take his first DNF of the year. The 40th-place finish dropped keeps Kenseth in the 12th-spot, 177 points behind Edwards and Johnson. Next week the Chase heads to the one-mile high-banked concrete monster in Dover, Delaware. Busch won the June race at Dover earlier this year, while Edwards is the defending race winner. With all but two Chase positions switching hands this weekend, next Sunday's race will be one you won't want to miss for sure.
