Denny Hamlin’s last two outings at Dover have not spelled success.
Not finishing the June event at Dover and recording a 38th place finish at the Monster Mile last September, Hamlin knows that a repeat performance is unacceptable. Currently occupying the sixth spot in the Chase standings, Hamlin hopes to use the momentum off of last weekend's top-10 finish to propel him to yet another strong outing.
"We are still right in the thick of the Chase heading to Dover and that's where we wanted to be," Hamlin said of his 9th place finish last week at New Hampshire. "You certainly don't want to put yourself out of contention early because, as we know from experience, it's really hard to climb back into the Chase." The "Monster Mile" is just as its nickname states, a monster. "Dover is a tough track but a great track," Hamlin said. "You have a lot of challenges to the drivers and the teams at Dover because it's so different than any other track we race during the season. It's very fast, it has a unique surface and it's a place where wrecks tend to collect a bunch of cars. On top of that, from the driver's seat, Dover is a really physical track and I know it took me a couple of races there to really learn how to manage both the physical and mental part of racing there." That monster has ended some races for the FedEx team in the past, but Hamlin intends to not dwell on history and focus on what is happening now. With every point counting, any minor slip-up could cost Hamlin a potential shot at a victory and ultimately a Sprint Cup Series championship. "I know Dover is an easy place to get in trouble and that this No. 11 team has had some really good cars that haven't seen the end of the race there. We're looking to put all of that behind us and I think we'll be really competitive this weekend." With everything on the line, expect the No. 11 FedEx team to deliver a strong finish in Sunday's Camping World RV 400 at Dover International Speedway.
