A Welcomed Sight For Juan Pablo
Wednesday, 18 June 2008 19:00

Not much has gone right for Juan Pablo Montoya in 2008. The Columbia-native is in his second year of Cup Series competition and has been experiencing what many NASCAR regulars consider the 'sophomore slump'.

Since the season began in Daytona, Montoya has endured two crew chief changes and a string of disappointing runs. The driver of the No. 42 Dodge is currently 22nd in the series standings and has only one top-5 (Talladega) finish on the year.

This team - and the entire Chip Ganassi Racing organization - desperately needs something positive to happen, and soon. The Toyota/Save Mart 350 this weekend at Infineon provides them with the perfect opportunity to regain some much-needed confidence heading into the second-half of the season.

Heading to Sonoma, Montoya returns to the track where he scored his first - and only - Cup Series victory. Using pit strategy and gambling on fuel mileage, Montoya got the best of Robby Gordon and Jamie McMurray, who had been contenders for much of the afternoon, to earn his first win.

"Last year I felt a ton of pressure heading into Infineon because everyone expected to me to run well and win because of my background," Montoya explained. "This year I don't feel any pressure. Our goal is to run well, and if we have a shot at the win obviously we are going to take it."
