After landing the second fastest during the test sessions at Lowe's Motor Speedway on Tuesday night, Scott Speed appears to be poised for his Cup Series debut in the Bank of America 500.
With A.J. Allmendinger out of Red Bull Racing a seat has become available, and all fingers point to Speed as the future driver. Speed does not believe that he had anything to do with Allmendinger getting released.
"I would say I'm in a very lucky position because I know Red Bull is behind me, and I know Red Bull will eventually put me there and let me have a shot at it," stated Speed. "Even if A.J. was here and they thought it was right, we would run a third car next year. It's really just waiting for the right time, and honestly what's happening with A.J. doesn't have anything to do with us." Speed has spent the season participating in the ARCA Series where he has amassed four wins and finishing in the top-10 in 16 of the 18 races, which put him on the top of the point standings. He has also performed in the Craftsman Truck Series for 10 events this season for Bill Davis Racing, where he has collected one win, three top-5 and five top-10 finishes. Revealing that the ARCA Series has not taught him as much as his outings in the Truck Series have taught him, Speed notes that the trucks drive more similar to the current car in the Cup Series than anything else. "Truck racing has been amazingly valuable to me," Speed said. "I learned way more in one Truck race than I did in a whole season of racing in ARCA." Although he has no doubts in his mind that he is ready to compete with the best, Speed knows that the more experience he gets outside of the Cup Series can only benefit him. "I'm very sure I could have come over here right from Formula One, gotten in a [new car], and not looked stupid," Speed said. "I would have gone out and raced and I would not have been as successful as I would be right now there, but I could have done it and I wouldn't have looked silly. The more experience I have outside of it -- before I go into the [new car] at the Cup level -- the better I'll be when I get there."
