Chase? What Chase?
Friday, 26 September 2008 18:08

Juan Pablo Montoya showed you don't have to be a Chase driver to be a contender by earning his first career pole position in Friday's qualifying session at the Kansas Speedway. The driver of the No. 42 Texaco/Havoline Dodge will make his 66th career start Sunday and after a lap of 31.37 seconds at 172.150 mph, Montoya will do so from the top-spot.

"We want this so bad," Montoya said after his fast run, "We want to run good so bad, everyone in the Ganassi camp wants to run good so bad we just don't want to jinx this."

The Chip Ganassi Racing driver led a number of non-Chase drivers who will try to and steal a win come Sunday. Only two Chase drivers, Jimmie Johnson and Matt Kenseth qualified in the top-10, while five Chasers will start Sunday's race outside the top-30.

Johnson - the highest qualifying Chase driver - will roll off from the second spot after putting down a lap of 31.39 seconds at a speed of 172.007 mph. Johnson's future teammate - Mark Martin - will start Sunday's race from the third spot. Matt Kenseth will try to back up his strong run at Dover by starting fourth on Sunday, while Elliott Sadler rounded out the top-10.

As far as the other Chase drivers are concerned, some are scattered throughout the field while a number are clumped together at the back of the pack.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. will start Sunday's race from the 12th-spot, with teammate Jeff Gordon one row behind him in 14th.

Back-to-back winner Greg Biffle will try to make it three-in-a-row Sunday and will do so from the 19th starting spot.

Kansas-native Clint Bowyer laid down the 25th fastest time of the day, while Kyle Busch and his Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Denny Hamlin will roll off 28th and 31st.

Four of the Chase drivers will start the Camping World 400 with at least thirty-four cars ahead of them. Points leader Carl Edwards posted the 35th fastest time, while Richard Childress Racing teammates Kevin Harvick and Jeff Burton will roll of 37th and 38th.

The slowest of the Chase drivers and almost a full second off the pole-winning speed was two time champion Tony Stewart, who qualified a disappointing 42nd. The driver of the No. 20 Home Depot Camry will have his work cut out for him on Sunday, but will not be the only one.

The Camping World 400 presented by Coleman can be seen this weekend live from Kansas Speedway starting at 1 p.m. ET on your local ABC channel, or tune in to you local MRN station on the radio dial.
