A Look Back - Burton Leads 'Em All
Thursday, 26 June 2008 19:00

For Jeff Burton, the Dura Lube 300 sponsored by Kmart on September 17, 2000 was the kind of race that comes once in a blue moon - maybe even a career. Despite qualifying second, Burton was able to move past pole-sitter Bobby Labonte to lead the first lap. From there on out, Burton never budged. In a rare feat that has yet to happen since, Burton went on to lead each and every lap of the race, en route to his third win of the year.

That weekend, NASCAR made the decision to implement the use of restrictor plates on the one-mile track following the deaths of Adam Petty and Kenny Irwin Jr. earlier in the year. Although the two died in separate incidents, both were killed in eerily similar fashions and in almost the exact spot on the track. The crashes were determined to be caused by stuck throttles and NASCAR reacted by using restrictor plates to slow the cars down.

This decision to use restrictor plates sent teams scrambling. In a short amount of time, engine builders were forced to build brand new engines and experiment with things never before tried on a one-mile track. Just like today, many teams utilized the Milwaukee Mile in order to get a handle on things, but still there were a horde of unknowns.

The use of the restrictor plates resulted in only one pass for the lead the entire day - Burton's pass on Labonte on Lap 1 - and, for many, made for a boring event. However, in NASCAR's eyes the race was an overall success.

In all, Burton has four total victories at the Magic Mile - all with his former team Roush Racing. This year, Burton hopes to rekindle that winning spirit as he searches for his second win of the season and attempts to accumulate as many bonus points as possible before the Chase.
