After a 43rd-place finish in Saturday night's Coke Zero 400, it is clear the incident with Juan Pablo Montoya wasn't the only big hit Greg Biffle took in Daytona.
The Roush Fenway Racing driver made contact with Montoya as the two came off Turn 4, sending the No. 16 hard into the wall and brining out the third caution of the day. The disappointing finish was a major blow to the team as they dropped three spots in the standings to 11th.
"I was just too tight coming off the corner," Biffle explained. "The 42 had a run on the outside of me and there was nothing I could do. I tried to keep the car down, but it just kept sliding up there. But, you know, it happens. It's racing. He was up beside me and I just pushed up there. There was nothing I could do. I figured he'd give me a little break there, but we're racing for last position back there, and he wants to go like heck every lap." With only eight races remaining until the twelve-man field is set for the Chase, Biffle is walking on thin ice. Only eight points ahead of Tony Stewart - who is currently in 12th - Biffle can not afford any more runs like last week. Since his third place run at Dover in June, Biffle has failed to crack the top-10 and has dropped from fifth in the standings to eleventh heading into Chicago this weekend. One of the hottest drivers aside from Kyle Busch only months ago, mechanical issues and driver error spoiled what could have been a number of great finishes. Heading to a track where Biffle has three 11th-place finished in the last three year, this team will have to turn the heat up on the competition over the next eight weeks or risk missing out on the Chase entirely.
