Non-Chase Drivers Dominate Talladega Qualifying

For the second week in a row, non-Chase drivers dominated qualifying while many Chase drivers struggled. Last week at Kansas only two Chase drivers (Jimmie Johnson and Matt Kenseth) qualified in the top-10, yet in Saturday's time trials Carl Edwards was the fastest championship contender in twelfth.

Yates Racing's Travis Kvapil took the top-spot Saturday afternoon after laying down a fast lap of 51.109 seconds at 187.364 mph to earn his first career pole in his 100th career start.

"I'm really just thankful for Yates Racing and Roush Yates Engines," Kvapil explained. "This is a brand new race car. All the guys that build these things back in Concord, they did a great job in the fab shop and I'm just really proud. Todd Parrott loves coming to speedway races and hedid a great job preparing this car. All of the guys on the 28 team did a phenomenal job. I'm just really excited to drive it. We've got another new sponsor on board with Academy Sports and Outdoors, so we're excited to have a good showing for them."

The driver of the No. 28 Ford Fusion will roll off with Hendrick Motorsports' Casey Mears to his outside. Mears ran the second fastest lap with a time of 51.128 seconds at 187.295 mph.

Until Kvapil and Mears made their runs, it appeared Dale Earnhardt Inc. was going to sweep the top spots, yet they were left to settle with third, fourth and fifth. Aric Almirola will lead the DEI trio in the No. 8 U.S. Army Chevrolet, with Regan Smith and Paul Menard following suit.

Mike Wallace, Joe Nemechek and Tony Raines were the fastest of the drivers that were required to qualify on speed. Wallace, who piloted a fourth Richard Childress Racing entry, put the No. 33 Realtree 'Driven to the Outdoors' Chevrolet securely in the show by laying down the sixth fastest lap. Nemechek will roll off seventh in Sunday's Amp Energy 500 after qualifying on the pole position earlier this year at Talladega. Tony Raines locked the No. 70 Haas CNC Racing Chevrolet into the show after putting down a lap of 51.280 seconds at 186.740 mph.

Red Bull Racing Team's Brian Vickers and DEI's Martin Truex Jr. rounded out the top-10.

When the field takes the green flag for Sunday's Amp Energy 500 the twelve Chase drivers will be scattered throughout the 43-car field. Edwards will roll off 12th, while Jeff Burton will be the next Chase driver in 17th. Dale Earnhardt Jr. qualified his No. 88 Amp Energy Chevrolet in the 15th-spot, but will have to drop to the back of the pack after an engine change on Friday afternoon. Points leader Jimmie Johnson will start from the 20th position, while he will have the man third in points, Greg Biffle, right behind him in 22nd.

Jeff Gordon will try to make it back-to-back wins in the fall Talladega race from the 26th starting spot. Matt Kenseth will roll off 31st, with Tony Stewart, Clint Bowyer, Denny Hamlin and Kyle Busch grouped together 34th through 37th. Richard Childress Racing's Kevin Harvick was the slowest of the Chase drivers and will roll off from the 39th-spot.

With forty-five cars gunning for only forty-three spots, Sam Hornish Jr. and Patrick Carpentier were forced to head home after failing to make the show.
