Keselowski To Make His Cup Debut This Weekend At LMS
Tuesday, 07 October 2008 05:45

On Thursday evening Brad Keselowski will attempt to qualify the No. 25 GoDaddy.com Chevrolet Impala SS for Hendrick Motorsports. If the mission is successful, Keselowski will participate in his first Sprint Cup event.

The No. 25 is no new car in the Hendrick garage. It was most recently ran in 2007 with Casey Mears in the cockpit, and recorded a victory at Lowe's Motor Speedway in May's Coca-Cola 600.

Although it is scheduled to be his first event, it does not mean he is new to the car. Keselowski has ran hundreds of laps for Hendrick Motorsports' research and development team. His experience testing the car should serve as a launch pad for the young driver as he knows how to succeed.

A regular in the Nationwide Series, Keselowski boasts a third place finish at the track that he recorded last May. He will perform in both the Sprint Cup and Nationwide events at LMS this weekend.

"I think it's a mental challenge going between the two cars because they drive so much different, but the big thing is the track itself," noted Keselowski. "You get to learn a lot about it. You get to see how it changes with the temperature. You know the track is constantly changing, not only with temperature, but the way the tires lay rubber into it. You get to learn a lot about the track, so I think it's an advantage all in all.

"It's a welcome challenge -- to have the scheduling be diverse like that. It's a great opportunity to drive the GoDaddy.com Chevrolet, and I'm going to try to make the most of that and focus on that."

Keselowski is not the only driver in Hendrick Motorsports' line-up that has made their Cup debut at Lowe’s Motor Speedway. Dale Earnhardt Jr. first appeared in the series at LMS in May of 1999, and Jimmie Johnson kicked off his career at Lowe's in October of 2001.

"That's kind of cool -- I didn't know they made their debut there," the Nationwide regular exclaimed. "I got some advice from Dale (Earnhardt Jr.) about how to react to the track and how to stay calm and focused on it, and I think it's going to be a tough task for sure. Looks like it's going to be a great field of cars, and the hardest part is going to be the qualifying. I feel comfortable with the racing part, but qualifying for the show is going to be the hardest part."

Heading into Charlotte, Keselsowski's initial goal is to make the race. Should he make it, he will aim to run a clean race and make it to the finish line.

"The first goal is to make the race," said Keselowski. "This is probably the toughest race all year to make. Charlotte brings out a lot of cars; everyone wants to try some new things. So goal No. 1 obviously is to make the race, and then settle in and learn and just to have a strong showing and run all the laps.

Keselowski simply said of his finish, "We'll see what result that produces."

With crew chief Lance McGrew by his side Keselowski will not only enter at Lowe's, but at Texas Motor Speedway as well. Keselowski revealed that the two have great chemistry.

With the two developing their compatibility over the testing sessions at Lowe's Motor Speedway, things should begin to further blossom as they go to compete with the best that the sport has to offer.

Confident in his abilities, Keselowski looks to make some noise at this weekend's Bank of America 500.

"You need to respect the drivers around you whether you're in the Chase or not," Keselowski stated. "I feel like if I just stick to the way I've raced my whole career as far as respecting my competitors, it won't make adifference. I'm just very thankful to have this opportunity. I'm lucky to be here."
