Allmendinger Re-Energized, But Not By Red Bull

Ladies and gentlemen, he's back!

On Monday, Michael Waltrip Racing announced their plans to put A.J. Allmendinger in the cockpit of the No. 00 Toyota Camry for the Bank of America 500 at Lowe's Motor Speedway.

After failing to qualify for the Kansas event, MWR team owner/driver Michael Waltrip decided to take McDowell out from behind the wheel in order to place the 00 Camry in the top-35 by the time that the checkered flag is dropped at Homestead-Miami Speedway in November.

"Our singular focus with the No. 00 team is to reposition the team in the top 35 in owners points and be there in end,” noted Waltrip. "The decision for us to continue to make changes is about our organization."

The organization entered Kenny Wallace in the Amp Energy 500 at Talladega Superspeedway with all intentions of achieving that goal. The decision payed off, Wallace scored a 12th place finish and moved the team within 39 points of the top-35.

"Kenny Wallace did a tremendous job for us at Talladega and recorded the team’s best finish of the season," Waltrip stated.

Although Waltrip is unsure of who will navigate the No. 00 Toyota for the remainder of the season, he feels strongly that putting Allmendinger in the driver's seat will help the team attain what they have set out to do.

"We’re still closely evaluating the remaining Cup races. We’re moving in the direction of having multiple drivers based on their experiences at particular tracks." Confident in his choices, Waltrip said, "I know AJ will do a great job for us too in our Toyota Camrys."

Allmendinger was last in a Cup car for the race at Kansas where he collected a ninth place finish. Now with a chance to put a spotlight on him and try and secure a ride for next season, Allmendinger will put forth his best effort to assmeble a strong result.

“Over the past couple of months the [MWR] organization has really picked up with how everyone has been running,” Allmendinegr said. “Hopefully, I can go out there and do a good job and get the No. 00 Champion Mortgage Toyota team back inside the top 35."
