Vickers' Struggles Continue At Lowe's
Monday, 13 October 2008 06:04

Once again at the Lowe's Motor Speedway, Brian Vickers had a strong run for most of the night only to watch it all slip away. The mile-and-a-half track in Concord, N.C. has been of the best tracks on the circuit for the Red Bull Racing Team driver. However, the last few times the No. 83 Red Bull Toyota has appeared to be on its way to a victory only to have something go wrong.

Definitely a contender for the win on Saturday night, Vickers led one time for a total of sixty-four laps - at times extending his lead to over seven seconds. That lead went away under a round yellow flag pit stops on Lap 198. Leading the field to pit road, Vickers lost five spots and lost that ever valuable clean air. Three cars stayed out, forcing Vickers to restart ninth.

Just fifty-four laps later, Vickers drifted up the track and into the outside wall. An apparent flat right front tire - the second in two weeks - sent the No. 83 Toyota into the outside wall and out of contention. NASCAR officials deemed the racing surface was clean and the situation did not warrant a yellow flag. Vickers was left to limp around the top of the racetrack, waiting to make his way onto pit road.

When it was all said and done, Vickers' promising run turned into a disappointing 18th-place finish. For some reason it seems, Vickers can never avoid the bad luck at Lowe's, often leaving him frustrated and winless at the track.

"I can't believe it. We just can not catch a break at this track," Vickers explained. "I don't know what it is. We always have a dominant car here -- usually the dominant car and we have never been able to capitalize on it for a win. It's very frustrating. Today, we blew a right front tire with about 100 laps to go and NASCAR didn't put out a caution. We ended up going down two laps. The last thing I wanted to do was turn across traffic where I could have caused a big wreck. Everyone on this team works their butts off and we have been close to a win so many times this year. Our time will come -- hopefully, sooner than later."

Saturday night's frustration was even worse considering Vickers' run earlier this year in the Coca-Cola 600. The No. 83 Red Bull Toyota stayed out front for much of the evening, until a loose wheel flew off the left rear and sent the car spinning hard into the wall.

This team has come a very long way in a short amount of time and should take pride in their strong runs at Lowe's this year, especially considering Vickers did not even make the show in last year's Bank of America 500. Their time will come and when it does, look out. With the strength Vickers has shown at Lowe's, all it will take is a bit of luck and this team could very well find themselves celebrating next May in Victory Lane.
