The dynamic duo of Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson continued to dominate the weekend's headlines as they ran one-two in the final practice session of the weekend. Johnson was fastest in the day's opening session, with Gordon right behind him in second. About an hour later, it was Gordon atop the leader board with Johnson just seven one-thousandths of second behind his teammate.
Still winless this year, Jeff Gordon looks stronger this weekend than at any other point this year. The four-time champion has seven victories at the half-mile in Martinsville and appears confident he can get the job done. "We're just not a team that lies down and gets up," Gordon explained. "We always constantly work to get better. Unfortunately, this season has taken us a lot longer than it should have to get ourselves where we need to be to be competitive enough to be higher up in the points and win that race that we haven't gotten so far this year.
"It's just been one of those years where when we've got the car, either I make a mistake or something bites us. When we have everything else going right, we can't seem to get the car that we need," Gordon added. "It's definitely been a frustrating and challenging year for us in a lot of ways. It?s just something for us to continue to work and improve, not only this season, but also for next season." Judging by Saturday's two practice sessions, it looks as if we could have a rematch of the spring race last year where Johnson and Gordon bumped and banged with each other to settle it amongst themselves. Clint Bowyer, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Jamie McMurray, Denny Hamlin, Carl Edwards, Juan Pablo Montoya, Martin Truex Jr. and A.J. Allmendinger rounded out the top-10. Sunday's TUMS QuikPak 500 is scheduled for a 1:30 pm E.T. start. Coverage of the sixth race in the Chase can be see on your local ABC station and heard on your local MRN dial beginning at 1 p.m. E.T.
