Hendrick Motorsports Dominates at Martinsville
Sunday, 19 October 2008 17:44

If anyone had any doubt Jimmie Johnson is headed for his third straight title, Sunday's performance in the TUMS QuikPak 500 proved he is definitely the man to beat. Johnson flat out dominated the 500-lap event, leading seven times for a total 338 laps en route to his fifth victory at the .526-mile oval.

The only real competition Johnson was forced to deal with throughout the afternoon came from Hendrick Motorsports teammates Jeff Gordon and Dale Earnhardt Jr. While Gordon looked to have one of the best cars in the first half of the race, the No. 24 DuPont Chevrolet faded late.

Earnhardt Jr. had one of the best cars in the field on the long run, but at a place like Martinsville, those are few and far between. While he could close in on the back bumper of Johnson, Earnhardt Jr. was never able to get around his teammate to lead a lap.

The twelfth and final caution flag of the day flew on Lap 497, forcing a green-white-checkered finish, short track style. Johnson had Earnhardt Jr. in his mirror, with a hard-charging Carl Edwards pressuring the No. 88 from the third-spot.

Taking the green flag, Johnson pulled away from the rest of the field and took the checkered flag. Earnhardt Jr. came home with the second-spot, while Edwards, Gordon and Denny Hamlin rounded out the top-five.

Casey Mears made a late-race charge and battled with Denny Hamlin hard for the fifth spot, trying to put all four Hendrick Motorsports cars in the top-five. Mears could not make the pass on the Virginia-native and was forced to settle for the sixth-spot. The sweep of the top-two spots marked the twenty-third time Hendrick cars have finished one-two.

With his sixth win of the 2008 season, Johnson now enjoys a 149 point lead over Greg Biffle in second. Now with two wins, four top-5s and six top-10s in six Chase races, Johnson is putting the pressure on the rest of the Chase field to get the job done.

"As long as I can just hold off and just worry about winning races, the better," Johnson said of his attitude towards his possible third title. "Hopefully, I can do that over the next two or three races and cruise on from there.

"I'm ready to go to Atlanta. I wish we were dropping the green at Atlanta right now."
