Practice has wrapped up for the weekend here at the Atlanta Motor Speedway, with Carl Edwards taking the top spot in both sessions. The driver fourth in points toped the speed charts for the second time of the day, running a fast lap of 30.499 seconds at 181.776 mph
In eight races at the mile-and-a-half speedway in Hampton, Georgia, Edwards has two wins - including his first career victory - four top-5s and ten top-10s. Perhaps overshadowed by Kyle Busch's win and the tire issues, Edwards led thirty-three laps in March's Kobalt Tools 500 before an engine failure ruined his day. "This spring, that car was so awesome," Edwards said. "We had a huge lead and something let go in the engine. This track has been so good to me and I love it so much that all week I haven't hardly been able to wait to race. I just really want to race, so I'm very excited about the race on Sunday." If he wants to catch Johnson for the title - and you better believe he does - Edwards knows this winning this weekend would put him on the right track. "Really, everybody knows that Jimmie's got that giant lead and we just have to go out and we have to win races and hope that all the luck balances out and we can catch him," the driver of the No. 99 Office Depot Ford Fusion added. "We've got a great race car." Dale Earnhardt Inc.'s Paul Menard was second fastest in the fifty-minute session, with Kevin Harvick, Mark Martin and Greg Biffle rounding out the top-5. As far as the rest of the Chase drivers; Matt Kenseth was seventh, while Jeff Burton, Jimmie Johnson, Clint Bowyer and Kyle Busch ran 20th-23rd. Denny Hamlin put his No. 11 FedEx Toyota in the 28th-spot, with Jeff Gordon and Tony Stewart bringing up the rear in 34th and 39th, respectively. Sunday's Pep Boys Auto 500 is scheduled for to begin at 2:00pm E.T., with coverage beginning on your local ABC station and PRN radio dial beginning at 1:00pm E.T.
