Friday afternoon at the Atlanta Motor Speedway, Richard Petty joined Darrell Gwynn of the Darrell Gwynn Foundation and Kevin King of YearOne to unveil a restored version of the famous 1970's Superbird.
Donated by professional wrestler Bill Goldberg, King and his crew at YearOne completely rebuild the Superbird with a modern day drive train and engine donated by Ray Evernham. The motor is a NASCAR-spec 358ci engine, without NASCAR restrictions, that turns about 750 horsepower. Not only is this Superbird one bad machine, King and his team decided to add a blue and black paint scheme to the car, reminiscent of the famed 'Petty Blue' scheme run for many years.
The car will be auctioned off in January at the Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Event in Scottsdale, Ariz. Proceeds raised from the auction will go towards the Darrell Gwynn Foundation. A former NHRA star, Gwynn was paralyzed in a racing accident in 1990. Gwynn created the Darrell Gwynn Foundation in 2002 in order to provide wheelchairs for children, as well as to advocate for people with other spinal cord injuries. "This is an updated NASCAR legend - a near exact replica of the Superbird Richard Petty drover into history every Sunday in the early '70s. There's not another one like it available today," Gwynn said of the car. "We are extremely grateful to Bill Goldberg for spearheading its creation and then donating it to the Foundation." "Anything that will help his foundation, because his foundation helps the same kinds of kids that Kyle's camp does up in Level Cross," Petty said. "The Superbird was built strictly as a race car in 1970, I think. They had trouble giving them away when they first got them, now they?re collector items." One of Tony Stewart's championship cars was auctioned off by the Darrell Gwynn Foundation at Barrett-Jackson auction earlier this year. The car raised more than $500,000 with ancillary donations, but Gwynn hopes to better that number. "We're hoping to set a new record when this one-of-a-kind, Richard Petty-inspired Superbird goes on the block in January," Gwynn explained. "It's a one-of-a-kind situation," Petty added. "We hope by being on Barrett-Jackson we give a lot of publicity to Darrell's foundation and let people out there know there are people trying to help people."
