Kurt Busch had a terrible weekend to say the least at Martinsville. The driver of the No. 2 Miller Lite Dodge had issue after issue and at one point asked his crew if he could just park it for the day. Busch finished the day 36th and extremely disappointed.
This weekend at the Atlanta Motor Speedway, Busch was able to reverse his fortune and seriously contend for the win. Busch used the high line in both corners to be one of the fastest cars in the field, despite smacking the wall out of turn four in the middle part of the race. With a great stop on Lap 210, Busch was able to narrowly beat Matt Kenseth off pit road to take the top-spot. Late in the run, however, Busch seemed to drop off a bit as others came on strong. Coming home sixth, Busch scored his second top-10 in three weeks. Despite last week's terrible run at Martinsville, the Penske Racing driver ran very well at Lowe's Motor Speedway and finished in the third-spot.
"We felt like the run we had at Charlotte was a good place to start," the 2004 Cup Series champion explained. "We made changes based on the track being different here at Atlanta rather than Charlotte. All in all, that was the core setup. We polished on it from there. There are a couple of things that we're thinking about right now that we would have liked to have had. That's better than normal. Most of the time, we're scratching our head because we're so far out of the box. It was a really good run with the Miller Lite Dodge. We led laps; we were competitive. I think that's the key work that (car owner) Roger Penske likes to use - we were competitive. No matter if we won or if we finished 10th, we had a good day today and brought it home in sixth." With a number of cautions falling there at the end of the going, Busch seemed to loose all the momentum he had on his side. "You knew they would be coming," Busch said of the cautions. "I've seen this race go heavy cautions at the end. I think Denny Hamlin had problems with a fuel pump last year, spun his tires and a bunch of guys went every which way. So we knew we were going to have to put up a fight. We just didn't quite have the right adjustments made on the laspit stops."
This season has not exactly been what Busch had hoped for. Experiencing more weekends like Martinsville than weekends like Lowe's and Atlanta have left Busch seventeenth in the standings and a bit disappointed. With only one win on the season - coming in New Hampshire thanks to a great call to stay out and wait out the rain - Busch should be pleased with his performances at Lowe's and Atlanta. The best thing for this team is to carry some of that momentum with him on to the next three races.
