Coming off of his highest finish in the 2008 season, Jamie McMurray has a bit of momentum built heading to a track where he has not posted very impressive numbers. In this past spring’s event at Phoenix International Raceway McMurray was able to collect his second best outing at the one mile speedway. Looking to improve on his 17th place finish in the Subway Fresh Fit 500, McMurray will need to adapt to the unique corners at the track.
“Phoenix is a fun race track to run at,” stated McMurray, “It’s a challenging track because you have to set up your car for two different corners. Turns one and two are completely different from three and four, so your car has to be balanced well enough to turn at both ends.” In the past four races McMurray has placed the No. 26 Ford Fusion in the top-10 three times. With a third place finish at Texas last weekend, McMurray would prefer to say that his crew chief put his car there.
“Last weekend in Texas, I thought we were going to win the race. Had a couple guys ahead of me run out of gas, we were going to be there,” noted McMurray. “Larry (Carter) did a great job last weekend with the calls on the pit box and knowing how things were going to shape up there at the end of the race.” With the impetus that the No. 26 team has built in the past few weeks there is no doubt that they can reel in another strong finish. “After the last few weeks and the way the No. 26 IRWIN Industrial Tools team has been running, I’m really looking forward to the race this weekend in Phoenix.” McMurray continued, “It’s remarkable how fast our cars have been from the minute we unload them. It’s always a good feeling going to a track knowing that you will have a fast car when you get there.”
