Earlier this year at the Lowe's Motor Speedway, Michael Waltrip announced a partnership between his organization and Toyota's Technician Training and Education Network (T-TEN) to bring more diversity to the NASCAR Nation.
That honor of being the first ever diversity apprentice chosen for this program goes to Native-American and Oklahoma-native Josh Ray. After joining many others in the search, Ray was one of three finalists chosen by the selection committee to interview for the position. Selected the best candidate for the job, Ray was granted a one year apprenticeship with Michael Waltrip Racing.
"When I first learned about this unique opportunity through the T-TEN newsletter, I never imagined I would be the one selected to be a part of this," Ray said of the situation. A student at the Oklahoma State University, Ray explained, "I am currently pursuing an engineering degree and am excited for the chance to apply my education and experience to the growth of the MWR/Toyota NASCAR organization." "This program is an important step for MWR in our effort to promote more diversity in our sport," explained Vice President and General Manager of MWR, Ty Norris. "Toyota created this unique opportunity and Josh showed us through the interview process that he has the desire to make NASCAR his home. MWR has gained a talented and motivated employee, while Josh has earned a chance to launch a long career." The apprenticeship at Waltrip's Race World USA is a technical position within the MWR organization. Working as a member of the team, his year will begin Monday, November 10, 2008. Throughout the year, Ray will be working with and learning three aspects of the team - the tear down area, electronics department and the suspension department.
