As Tony Stewart is poised to make his last start for Joe Gibbs Racing, his newly formed Stewart-Haas Racing (SHR) is continuing to develop. Friday, the team announced two additions to the No. 39 U.S. Army team.
Bobby Hutchens will come to the organization as the team's Director of Competition, while veteran crew chief Tony Gibson will sit atop the No. 39 pit box as Ryan Newman's crew chief. Both coming over from Dale Earnhardt Inc., Hutchens and Gibson bring experience and knowledge to an ever-impressive list of employees.
"These are two really important hires for our race team," Stewart explained of Friday's announcement. "Bobby Hutchens brings a ton of technical and management experience to SHR, and Tony Gibson has helped a lot of well-known drivers earn their recognition by getting them to victory lane. I'm very proud to have both of these guys as a part of my team." Hutchens comes to SHR with twenty-years of Cup Series experience, most of which spent with Richard Childress Racing and Dale Earnhardt. In 2007, Hutchens was named the general manager of the Earnhardt-Childress Racing Engines, but became DEI's vice president of competition earlier this year. "Stewart-Hass Racing has an incredible amount of potential, and to be an integral part of what we all believe can be a championship-winning organization was an opportunity I could not turn down," Hutchens added. "It's important that a race team's front office is in sync with what's happening on the shop floor, and having liven in both world, I'm committed to making Stewart-Haas Racing a strong and efficient operation." With the week's news that DEI and Chip Ganassi Racing, it is now clear that both Hutchens and Gibson are looking forward to moving on and working with Tony Stewart and Ryan Newman. A crew chief since 2002, Tony Gibson has called the shots for drivers such as Mark Martin, Aric Almirola, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Steve Park and Michael Waltrip. In addition, Gibson has been a part of three championship winning teams (Jeff Gordon in 1998 and 2001, and Alan Kulwicki in 1992). "I've known Tony for a long time and have always respected him as a racer and as a person," Gibson explained. "He understands people, works well with them, and genuinely wants to see them succeed. And he's smart enough to know that their success is also his success. He's building an impressive race team, and I'm very happy to be a part of it and I look forward to working with him and Ryan." Friday's announcement is further proof that despite being a newly formed team, Stewart-Haas Racing should be a serious threat come next season. Two proven drivers (Stewart and Newman), three top-notch sponsors (Old Spice, Office Depot and the U.S. Army), and two veteran crew chiefs (Darian Grubb and now Tony Gibson) is a recipe to be desired and something every other team in the garage will be forced to deal with.
