Working towards his third consecutive Cup Series title, Jimmie Johnson put the No. 48 Lowe's/Kobalt Tools Chevrolet atop the speed charts in Saturday's opening practice session at the Homestead-Miami Speedway. Posting a lap of 32.207 seconds at a speed of 167.665, Johnson was able to show he's not going to take it easy come Sunday afternoon.
Carl Edwards, the man chasing Johnson for the title, posted the seventh-fastest time of the session with a lap of 32.498 seconds at 166.164 mph in his No. 99 Office Depot Ford. Denny Hamlin was second fastest in the forty-five minute practice session, with Scott Speed, Martin Truex Jr. and Dale Earnhardt Jr. rounding out the top-5.
The Cup cars hit the track for their final practice session of the year later today at 2:50 pm E.T. With one last chance to figure out what they have before Sunday's Ford 400, expect Johnson and Edwards to be towards the top of the leader board once again.
