With Ryan Newman and Kurt Busch finishing first and second in the season opening Daytona 500 and rookie Sam Hornish Jr. collecting a 15th place finish, Penske Racing had a wonderful start.
35 races later, the organization didn't seem to have the same fire they had when the season began. With a shot of collecting the Rookie of the Year title, Hornish Jr. failed to qualify for the Ford 400 at Homestead-Miami Speedway. Teammates Newman and Busch finished 21st and 43rd respectively. "The way that we ran tonight, I guess I'm glad that the season is over. We really struggled tonight, and that's not how I wanted this last race to go," Newman stated. "Despite our run tonight, I'm very, very grateful for the opportunity that Roger (Penske) has given me over the last several years. The friendships and relationships that I've made over the last several years are priceless."
Next year Newman will move to Stewart-Haas Racing where he will look to be a stronger contender to win races.
"To win the Daytona 500 for Roger is something that I'll never forget," noted Newman. "My entire Alltel Dodge team fought every race to get the best finish that we could. I want to wish Kurt (Busch) and Sam (Hornish Jr.) and all the guys the best as I transition into a new race team." With a less than spectacular season behind him, Busch extended his congratulations to Jimmie Johnson who won the 2008 series title. After an eighth place finish in last years point standings, Busch was only able to place the No. 2 team in the 18th spot. "We're relieved that the 2008 season has come to an end here tonight," said Busch. "Congratulations to Jimmie (Johnson) and Chad (Knaus) on winning the NASCAR Cup championship. They had a great year and are well-deserved champions."
