Over the season's first 30 points events, Jamie McMurray struggled to collect only six tp-10 outings. With six races remaining in the 2008 season, McMurray decided that he would crank it up a notch.
Concluding the season with four top-5 finishes and on top-10 effort, the driver of the No. 26 may be on the verge of a breakthrough. “It’s makes you feel like you’re going to start the next year the same way, and I don’t think that ever in my career I had three top-fives in a row, so I’m really excited,” McMurray said. “It’s the best I’ve probably ever run.”
His third consecutive third place outing put the icing on the cake for the driver that, at one point, was concerned for his job. With teammate Carl Edwards winning three of the last four events by out lasting the other drivers, McMurray wants to take a look as to how Edwards gets the milage that he does. “What Carl is able to do – to have not only one of the fastest cars on the track but to be able to get the fuel mileage he does – I think that’s something a lot of drivers are gonna look into of how they can try to get better mileage because, obviously, I drive for the same team and we have the same carburetors and the same guys tuning them,” said McMurray. “It’s not like he has a bigger gas tank or a leaner engine, but he always gets better fuel mileage than everybody and the rest of us tend to get similar fuel mileage, but not as good as Carl, so we have to look at that and try to make that better as a whole.” With the way things have been going for the No. 26 team, McMurray is notso sure that he's ready for the season to end just yet noting, "On one hand I’d like to keep going because we’re doing so well."
