Cale Yarborough has been in the news lately after Jimmie Johnson tied his record of winning three consecutive championships, becoming the first driver to do so. Yarborough accomplished a great deal more during his 31-year career. I have taken a moment to point out some of his other success.

The South Carolina native began his career in 1957 at the Darlington Raceway. He picked up his first win at the Valdosta Speedway in 1965 driving car number 06. Cale got a ride in the Wood Brother's number 21 and began to win consistently in 1967, scoring two wins that year. The next year he saw the checkered flag wave six times.

The first year that Cale Yarborough was able to make every race on the schedule was in 1973. He drove car number 11 to four wins that year.

He won ten races in both 1974 and 1978, matching season high win totals.

Yarborough has won the Daytona 500 four times, 1968,1977, 1983 and 1984.

On the final lap of the 1979 Daytona 500 he was dualing with Donnie Allison for the win when both cars crashed and television cameras caught the fight between Yarborough and Donnie and Bobby Allison who stopped to help his brother.

In 1984, he became the first driver to qualify for the Daytona 500 with a top speed of more than 200 miles per hour.

His NASCAR record includes 83 victories, placing him fifth on the all time winners list.
