Logano Hits The High Banks Of Daytona

Before making his first career Sprint Cup Series race at the Daytona International Speedway, Joey Logano is getting his feet wet in the ARCA RE/MAX Series. Piloting the No. 25 Venturini Motorsports Toyota, Logano took to the high banks of the 2.5-mile "World Center of Racing" for a three-day test session in preparation for the Lucas Oil Slick Mist 200 on February 7, 2009.

During the first session of the weekend, Logano posted the sixth-fastest time, following Steve Blackburn, AJ Henriksen, Bobby Gerhart, Jonathan Gomez and Ali Owens. Logano ran a fast lap of 50.191 seconds at a speed of 179.569 in his Toyota.

Blackburn took to the top spot on the topped the leader board during the afternoon session with a lap of 49.736 seconds at a speed of180.955 mph. Tom Hessert III was second fastest, Patrick Sheltra was third, Bobby Gerhart fourth and Bobby Hamilton Jr. was fifth.

Making things more challenging for NASCAR's next prospect, Logano will compete in the Budweiser Shootout All-Star race on the same day as the ARCA race. Following the conclusion of the Lucas Oil Slick Mist 200, Logano will make his Sprint Cup Series debut behind the wheel of the No. 20 Home Depot Toyota against some of the best in the business.

"I'm looking forward to it," Logano said of his big day. "I've been here and watched a ton of races, watched the 500 a hundred times probably. I just want to get out there. We're almost ready to go out there and just go around Daytona with all the history around this place."

Just getting a feel for the speedway on the first day, Logano knows the most important thing is to get laps on the historic track. That does not mean the kid and the Venturini Motorsports team will not be a threat and contend for the win.

"Just to go out there and make laps is going to be really cool," Logano added. "We're going to learn a lot, as much as we can about the race car and about the track and drafting and see if we can come back with a good race car."

As if two races on the same day at Daytona were not enough, Logano will be racing a total of five events during his first real Speedweeks. Throw in the Gatorade Duel at Daytona 150-mile qualifying race, the Nationwide Series race on Saturday and the big show on Sunday and the 18-year-old Joe Gibbs Racing driver will have had one heck of a Speedweeks.

Always able to keep his composure and look at the big picture, Logano understands the importance of this three-day test. "I'm just getting as many laps as I can and learn as much as I can," Logano explained. "I've got a big year ahead on the Cup side."
